Copyright is a group of exclusive rights including the right to copy, which protects the
copyright owner from unauthorised use of something by other people (such as copying a
photograph without permission).
The ownership of copyright in photographs, art, music, film and video is determined by the
COPYRIGHT ACT 1968 and the general laws of copyright.
This statute is designed to protect the rights of the copyright owner. Photographs are
covered by this law that prohibits the copying of most works without the copyright owners
permission.
The owner of copyright is usually (but not always) the photographer who took the
photographs. The fact that you may have purchased a print does not automatically make you
the owner of copyright.
The laws of copyright provide protection for the copyright owner of artworks including
photographs that allow the artist to sue for compensation should the work be copied
without permission. The costs of such action and penalties are very high.
It is in your interests to ascertain who owns copyright BEFORE you have any photographs
copied. Please consult with the photographer.
COPYING PHOTOGRAPHS IS NOT WORTH THE RISK!!!
